Introduction
George Romanos (real name Yorgos Gouzoulis, Athens 16th of May 1947) is a Greek singer/songwriter, who as a teenager studied music and learned to play the guitar. His music ranges from Greek pop to psychedelic rock. During the 1960s George released several albums in Greece, most notably the album "In Concert And In The Studio” (1968), which includes four tracks that were recorded with Vangelis and his orchestra. In 1967 a 7” single was released in advance of the album, titled “To Roloi” (The Clock), a song that also involved Vangelis but did not get included on the album. By the time the album was released Vangelis and his band, including Demis Roussos and Lucas Sideras were on the move to France, to become the illustrious “Aprodite’s Child”...
In 1968 a second single made it from the album with the songs “I Agapi Mas Kimate Sta Nera” and “Ei Koritsi”. Curiously, that same year instrumental versions of the songs “To Roloi” and “I Agapi Mas Kimate Sta Nera” would also be released in Vangelis’ name on another 7” single , and with their English titles: “The Clock” and “Our Love Sleeps On The Waters”. This single is the very first solo single ever released by Vangelis!
In 1970 George Romanos released his most successful album to date, “Two Small Blue Horses”. This album is generally appreciated for it’s psychedelic rock, influenced by Greek traditional music, and features Argyris Koulouris on guitar. In 1972 George also moved to Paris, resulting in his next album “Dans Le Renier” (1974). In the early 1980s he permanently moved back to Greece, where he continued working as a musician and song writer.
In 2007 the LYRA record company released a CD single for “To Roloi”, which includes both the album version as well as Vangelis’ instrumental version. People in Greece may recognise “To Roloi”, as for years the start of the song was used by LYRA as the musical symbol in their advertising radio broadcasts....
