“L’Apocalypse Des Animaux” is the title of Vangelis' soundtrack album for a 1973 documentary television series with the same name. The wildlife series about the animal kingdom was made by French director Frédéric Rossif, and consists of six episodes, each of which includes music composed by Vangelis. The television series includes much more music than the soundtrack album, as is more often the case when Vangelis composes music for film.
According to the UK pressed LP the music was recorded in Paris in 1970, even though the album was released in 1973, coinciding with the first broadcast of the documentary series on French television in June. Perhaps the UK pressed LP is mistaken, but listening to the music heard in the television series it seems plausible.
One French pressed LP incorrectly lists the duration of the track ‘Création Du Monde’ as 17:45 minutes, which is much longer than its actual duration on the album. Possibly the longer duration is the original track length as composed by Vangelis, which was later reduced for the album, as Rossif’s documentaries contains longer versions of ‘Création Du Monde’.
Frédéric Rossif and Vangelis would later work together on other wildlife films and series, such as "La Fête Sauvage" (1976), "L'Opera Sauvage" (1976) and "Sauvage Et Beau" (1984).
In 2016 the “L’Apocalypse Des Animaux” album received a re-release which was personally remastered by Vangelis. This version is not recommended though, due to its added reverb. The best version is still the original album release.
