"Opera Sauvage" is the title of Vangelis' soundtrack album for the late 1970s documentary series "L'Opéra Sauvage" by French director Frédéric Rossif. The series consists of 21 episodes, almost all of which which include music provided by Vangelis. The documentary series includes much more music than can be heard on the album, as is more often the case when Vangelis composes music for film.
This album is one of the more popular albums of Vangelis, as it includes instant favorites such as "Hymne", "Rêve" and "L'Enfant". “Hymne” for instance has been used in TV commercials such as the “Barilla” tv ad in Italy, and the “Ernest & Julio Gallo wine” tv ad in the USA. Also the song was released on a (now rare) 7” single in The Netherlands to promote the album. The Spanish single of “L’Enfant” is one of the few singles of Vangelis released in the 12” format.
In 2017 the "Opera Sauvage" album received a re-release which was personally remastered by Vangelis. This version is recommended for its excellent sound quality, if you don’t mind the missing 7 seconds that were cut from ‘Flamants Roses’.
Other wildlife documentary series and films by Frédéric Rossif for which Vangelis composed an original score include "L'Apocalypse Des Animaux" (1973), "La Fête Sauvage" (1976) and "Sauvage Et Beau" (1984).
