PaulLabbeyFrontIntroduction

Paul Labbey (real name Paul Labbé) is a French singer who had a short lived music career in France in the early 1970s, recording several songs and releasing three 7” singles. One of these singles, 'Mon Bel Ange Blond' b/w 'Ma Romance' (1970) is produced by Vangelis.

Vangelis and Paul met in 1969 through their mutual impresario, Jean-Pierre Rawson (real name Jean-Pierre Doering), who was the manager of “Aphrodite’s Child” at the time. The songs seem to be related to the film “Piège Blond” by director Jean Jabely, as Paul is credited for his role in the film as 'guitarist'. Could it be that Paul Labbey is performing one or both of these songs in the film? That would be interesting to find out, so if you have seen this film please let me know!

It is not clear if Vangelis also plays on any of these songs, as he is only credited for producing. As part of the production Vangelis also mixed the songs. Paul Labbey released two more 7” singles in the 1970s, but those did not involve Vangelis.

Recording studio

It is not clear where exactly these songs were recorded, but considering the timing it is likely the same “Europa Sonor” studio at Rue de la Gaîté in Paris where Vangelis also recorded the last two albums of Aphrodite’s Child.
