Pasteur Le Siecle

Introduction

“Pasteur Le Siecle” is a documentary by French director Frédéric Rossif from 1987 for which Vangelis composed an original score. The documentary focusses on L’Institut Pasteur, a French non-profit organisation founded by the famous micro-biologist Louis Pasteur, which is dedicated to the study of biology, micro-organisms, diseases and vaccines.

The 52-minute documentary was broadcast on the 5th of October 1987 on French television channel FR3 as part of the “Océaniques” television series, and commemorates the 100th anniversary of L’Institut Pasteur. founded in Paris.

Most of the music that Vangelis wrote for the documentary is original, except for a couple of cues which are sourced from “Cantique Des Créatures” (1970) and “L’Apocalypse Des Animaux” (1973). The original music is a break in the style of music that Vangelis recorded in his London Nemo Studios until 1986. This score is reminiscent of the music as heard in the album “Direct” (1988) and could be some of the first music that Vangelis produced with help of the Zyklus MPS-1 machine.
