SportAidVHSFrontIntroduction

Sport Aid was a charity event organised to raise funds for famine relief in Africa, organised by a.o. Bob Geldof, who was earlier also involved in charity initiatives such as Band Aid (1984) and Live Aid (1985). The main event of Sport Aid, “The Race Against Time” took place on Sunday May 25th 1986, a global event where over 20 million runners from all over the world ran 10 kilometers to collect donations for famine relief in Africa. Vangelis donated several original compositions to the event, which were played during the worldwide television coverage.

On the 3rd of November 1986 a VHS video “Sport Aid, The Race Against Time” was released to raise further funds for the charity, showing scenes from the event. Several clips of Vangelis’ music can be heard during the scenes included on this video. In 1988 a second Sport Aid event was organised, but this did not involve Vangelis.
