SexPowerFrontIntroduction

At the end of 1969, while still being a member of “Aphrodite’s Child”, Vangelis composed his first music for a film outside of Greece. "Sex Power" (sub-titled "L'Homme Coeur") is a 81 minute long feature film, the first of French director Henry Chapier, who won the “Coquille d’Argent” award with his film at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain.

For a long time the musical score that Vangelis wrote for this film was highly sought after by collectors, as the soundtrack LP released by Philips in France (and Greece) is generally viewed as Vangelis’ very first solo album. Originally the soundtrack LP was released in limited numbers, making it difficult to find a copy which pushed the value to hundreds of euros. Nowadays copies can be found at a more reasonable price, after the soundtrack LP was re-released in 2013 on the Missing Vinyl label. This re-issue claims to have been sourced from the original analogue studio masters with an official licence, even though Vangelis was not involved, nor authorised the release.

The original soundtrack LP was released together with a 7” single, 'Djemilla' b/w 'Third Love', which is even more rare than the LP. It is not clear if the single (in a standard sleeve) was released commercially, but is seems likely it was only made for promotional purposes.

Unfortunately the album was never officially released on CD.

SexPowerLabelBackSexPowerLabelFrontTracklist and credits

As specified on the record labels:

  • 1ère partie   17'00
  • 2ème partie 17'27

The soundtrack LP simply indicates '1ère partie' and '2ème partie' on the labels of the front and back of the record. The music however consists of 11 tracks (6 on the front, 5 on the back)  which unfortunately are not individually named on the label or sleeve. The 7” single released off the soundtrack LP however make it possible to name two tracks on the album, i.e. 'Djemilla' is the 2nd and 'Third Love' the 5th track on the album.

Credits as shown on the back of the LP.

Discography

Officially the music is only available on LP. Any of the CD releases you may find of this album is a bootleg.

There are multiple bootleg CD’s, but I can confirm that this version has an excellent audio quality.

Recording studio

Although the recording studio is not mentioned on the album, it is likely that this music was recorded in the same “Europa Sonor” studio at Rue de la Gaîté in Paris, where Vangelis also recorded the last two albums of “Aphrodite’s Child”.
