Introduction
On Thursday the 30th of September 1999 the Greek Olympic Committee presented the emblem of the modern Olympic Games, to be held in Athens in 2004. A special event was organised at the Zappeion building of Athens in the presence of invited guests such as Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The ceremony was broadcast on Greek television channel ET1 and consisted of speeches by several dignitaries including Samaranch. Highlight of the event was the screening of an 11-minute video for which Vangelis composed original music, and which ultimately revealed the design of the emblem for the Olympic Games of Athens 2004. For the occasion Vangelis wrote a symphonic hymn supported by a large choir which performed live at the event. Part of the music was played again the next year in Sydney, Australia, at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games as a symbolic handover of the games to Athens.
