OlympicGamesCeremonyStill11Introduction

On the 1st of October 2000 the Olympic Games in Sydney ended with a closing ceremony. As part of this ceremony the Olympic flag was symbolically handed over to the city of Athens as the next location for the Summer Olympics in 2004. The 15-minute handover ceremony consist of the enactment of ancient Greek rituals by the priestesses of Olympia, supported by Vangelis’ music. Most of the music was already heard during the presentation of the Olympic Emblem for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games the year before, but one uplifting theme (during the entrance of the mayor of Sydney, Frank Sartor) was original and unique to this event. Some of the visuals seen at the Olympic Emblem presentation were also shown during the flag handover ceremony.

After this event Vangelis did not compose any other music for the Olympic Games and he was no longer involved in the organisation of the Olympic Games of Athens 2004.
